Sim City-State: The Mesopotamian City-Building Game

Regular price $4.99

Inspired by classic city-building video games like SimCity, this pencil and paper game gives students the opportunity to build their own Mesopotamian city-state. By adding walls, ziggurats, canals, fields, and other structures to their city, students compete to see whose city-state is the best. Each structure has a reward but also a penalty if it is left out completely. Each decision has weight, and students must decide what to build in order to maximize their city-state's success. Will you rise to the level of Babylonian Boss or remain a Desert Drifter? Welcome to Sim City-State!

I recently playtested the Sim City-State game with my high school mythology students as well as my own kids (ages 8 and 10), and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. The game does an excellent job of combining historical learning with the strategic gameplay of the “Sim-“ games that I grew up with.
For my students, it was a great classroom activity that we did after reading the “Epic of Gilgamesh” script stories. The game helped add some depth to what we’ve been discussing about early civilizations in an interactive and fun way. Some of the groups got particularly competitive with each other and wanted to try again to see if they could up their own scores.
At home, my kids were just as invested. The rules are clear and easy to follow for them, but had enough strategy where we could talk through our options, and I felt like I had room to let them make their own choices (which were sometimes less than ideal), and then we could discuss what went right/wrong.
Overall, Sim City-State is a fantastic blend of fun and learning. It was a lot of fun in both my mythology class and as a fun, quick game to play at home with my own kids. Highly recommended!

Exceptionally enriching cross-curricular experience that was such fun the students hardly noticed they were learning

I teach a 7th grade World History class that studies ancient and medieval history. Since students can simply Google any/all information about these civilizations, it's vital to make their learning interactive or they don't see the point. The Sim City-State: Mesopotamian City-Building Game did exactly that! Instead of hearing about how civilizations formed in early human history, they had to go through the challenges themselves. The task indirectly imparted information about history, while also requiring them to employ logic and math. I heard great discussions about the content and watched them enjoy the struggle, thereby developing some grit.

I cannot say enough about how user-friendly it is for the teacher (very little prep time and only computer, paper, and pencil required) and how entertaining for my students. They actually wanted to try it again (on their own club time) to try and break the record for high score. They asked me if we could do more simulations like this! Highly reccomend!
