Planet of the Apes (1968) Viewing Guide

Planet of the Apes (1968) appeared during a tumultuous time in American history. In 1963 the president John F. Kennedy had been assassinated in full public view. Cultural norms were changing as the counterculture movement gained momentum. The Vietnam War was leading to protests, and Americans were growing increasingly mistrustful of their government. On the social front lingering inequality among black and white citizens had started the Civil Rights Movement. In fact, Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated the same year the film premiered. The country seemed to be at a pivotal point. So what did a science fiction story about talking apes have to do with anything? A lot actually. The filmmakers used science fiction to comment on the inequality and injustice of the world around them.
