Monsters Medley

I used the Dracula resources and the Frankenstein Resources together as part of a Monster Unit that spanned 5 weeks, including the week of Halloween. My advanced British Literature students chose between the two novels, and we shared information about the two in class discussions. Part of the unit included reading the Script Stories but also reading certain corresponding stories from the classic texts. Both Readers Theater stories were excellent resources for the unit. My students loved taking parts and reading the script, and they even acted out a selection for their classmates. The simplified script versions helped the students make sense of two difficult texts, yet the opportunity to compare the immediacy and action of the script version to the rich language and description of the classic version lent another layer to the study of two great works of literature. We used the supplemental materials from the Dracula curriculum to study the epistolary literary form, and the students created their own journal of letter versions of a story. We also used the Gothic LIterature Power Point at the very start of the unit, as we explored the characteristics of Gothic Literature as a genre. Zack Hamby's materials are always true to the original novels, and the creativity and attention he uses in building the units make them relevant and engaging. I would highly recommend the Dracula Script Story package for all levels of high school students.

Excellent Unit on a very difficult book

My students started slowly while reading this, but I'm now enjoying listening to their comments and predictions about the text. This is a well laid out unit that really makes a somewhat difficult text accessible for all students.
